If you are having financial difficulties and receiving calls from your creditor demanding a payment, the following solutions area available, depending on your situation and the decision you make.
Contact your creditors
Explain why you are unable to make your payments and suggest making lower payments over a longer period of time. Surprisingly, many creditors are willing to accept such arrangements.
Debt consolidation loan
You can inquire with a bank or financial institution to consolidate your debts into one loan. In this case, the bank or financial institution will pay off all your debts and, in return, you make monthly payments to that creditor. Ensure that you shop around, as interest rates can vary.
Consumer proposal
A consumer proposal is a formal offer (under the Bankruptcy & Insolvency Act) made by a debtor to his or her creditors to modify their payments. As an example, you may make a proposal to your creditors to reduce the amount of your debts, extend the time you have to pay off the debt, or propose that your creditors accept a percentage of what is owing.
Bankruptcy
If none of the above methods solves your debt problem, you may choose to consider bankruptcy. Bankruptcy is a legal process. The purpose is to permit an honest, but unfortunate debtor, to obtain a discharge from their debts. You assign all of your assets, except those exempt by law, to a licensed trustee in bankruptcy. This process relieves you of most debts, and legal proceedings against you by creditors should stop.
